BASKETBALL RULES
2008-2009
All participants must read the Mizzou RecSports Handbook before participating. This can be found on our website: www.mizzourec.com
The officiating will be done by officials who are in absolute control of the game. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. Misconduct of spectators or players can result in assessment of a technical foul, 2 technical fouls (ejection) or forfeiture of the game. Spectators must also remain in the area designated by the supervisors. No spectators or players are allowed between courts. The supervisors shall have the power to make decisions on any matters or questions not specifically covered in the rules.
Play will be governed by the National Federation High School Rule Book with RecSports modifications.
START
1. GAME TIME IS FORFEIT TIME! Teams MUST be on the court, ready to play at the time the game is scheduled to start. It is advised that teams show up 15 minutes early to be properly prepared to play.
2. A minimum number of (3) three players must be present and ready at game time to avoid a forfeit. If not prepared at game time, the forfeit procedure will take place (See the RecSports Handbook). A team which forfeits twice during the regular season will be disqualified from playoff competition.
3. Jerseys will be provided to both teams by the RecSports Staff. Teams may wear their own uniforms if jerseys are of similar style and color, and numbers appear on the front and back of the jersey which should be at least 6 inches high on the back, 4 inches high on the front and not less that ¾ inch in width.

4. Teams will use the game ball provided by the RecSports Staff, unless both teams agree on a different game ball to be used before the game begins. Once play begins there will be no switching of the game ball.
5. A jump ball will start the game and any overtime period. Alternating possessions will then be followed.
PLAYERS
1. All teams consist of 5 players but are allowed to start and play with three.
2. When a team has forfeited, the opposing team must have at least three players checked in with the scorekeeper to receive a win.
3. All players must wear non-marking, rubber-soled shoes.
4. No current varsity basketball players, including red-shirts, are eligible.
5. A player may play on a maximum of two (one black, one gold when available) men’s/women’s, one co-rec and one Elite team (when available). A player may not play on more than one team in the same division even if they are in different skill levels (competitive or recreational). Once you have signed in to a game for a team, you many not switch to another team. Players may play in one “Black” division team (Sunday & Monday) and one “Gold” division team (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) when these are available.
6. All players must have current Mizzou Student Recreation Complex Membership. Participants are required to check-in with their Student I.D. or Membership card prior to each game. Participants will not be allowed to play without it.
EQUIPMENT
1. Players of opposing teams must wear contrasting colored shirts/jerseys. RecSports jerseys will be available for participants to check out at the RecSports Office before each game.
2. All basketball jerseys/shirts must have a permanent visible number on the front and the back of the shirt. Numbers that are taped on will not be allowed.
3. All players must wear non-marking, rubber soled, athletic shoes.
4. Equipment that may be dangerous to other participants such as hard billed hats, bandanas, casts, braces with exposed metal are prohibited. A player is allowed to wear a medical i.d. bracelet, but it must be flush with the player’s skin.
5. NO JEWLERY!
TIME
1. Games consist of two, 18-minute halves with a 3-minute halftime.
2. The game clock will run continuously except during the last 2 minutes of each half. It will then stop for all whistles.
3. Each team is allowed three, 1-minute time-outs per game. Time out must be called by a player on the court. Attempts to call time-out from the sidelines will result in a team technical foul.
4. Overtime: If necessary, a 3-minute period shall be played to determine a winner. The clock will stop on all whistles under the 1-minute mark. During the regular season only one overtime period will be played. During the playoffs, the overtime periods will continue until a winner is declared. There will be a 1-minute intermission between each overtime period. Timeouts do not carry over from regulation, each team will be given one timeout for overtime.
SCORING
1. Field goals are worth 2 points. Field goals taken behind the 3 point line are worth 3 points. (Exception: Co-Rec)
2. All free throws are worth 1 point.
3. Mercy Rule: If one team is up by 50 or more points at half-time the game will be ended and that team will be declared the winner. If a team is up by 30 points or more at the 10 minute mark or beyond in the second half the game will be ended and that team will be declared the winner. If one team is up by 20 points or more at the 2 minute mark or beyond in the 2nd half the game will be ended and that team will be declared the winner.
FOULS
1. The one-and-one will be in effect on the 7th team foul of each half. Two foul shots will be in effect after the 10th team foul of each half. Team fouls carry from the 2nd half into any overtime period.
2. A player is disqualified on their 5th personal foul, any flagrant foul or on their 2nd technical foul.
3. Intentional Fouls – 2 shots and possession to team fouled.
4. Flagrant Fouls – 2 shots and possession to team fouled, offender disqualified from the contest.
5. Technical Fouls – 2 shots, possession to team fouled.
SUBSTITUTIONS
1. All substitutions must report to the scorekeeper and wait until an official allows entrance into the game. Failure to do so will result in a technical foul.
CO-REC SPECIAL REGULATIONS
1. Teams may play with 3 women/2 men or 2 women/3 men. If playing with four players, it must be 2 women/2 men. If playing with three players it may be 2 women/1 man or 1 woman/2 men.
2. There is no restriction on who must handle the ball or where a player can be on the court.
3. Scoring: All baskets made by females are awarded an extra point. Field goals are worth 3 points. Field goals attempted behind the 3 point line are worth 4 points. Free Throws will be plus 1 shot for shooting fouls that do not result in a score.
4. Managers of opposing teams will make the choice what ball will be used for each game. If no agreement can be made, a women’s ball will be the default ball for co-rec games.
PLAYOFFS
Playoff brackets will be available on our website (www.mizzourec.com) following the end of the regular season and at the conclusion of the playoff manager’s meeting.
To compete in the playoffs, a player must have been listed on the roster during the regular season. You must check in with a RecSports scorekeeper to be considered legal and as participated in a game.
All teams that do not forfeit two games or receive two unsportsmanlike ratings will advance to playoffs.
Teams advancing to the playoffs must be prepared to play at any scheduled time and place during the tournament.
Teams that finish with a 3.0 Sportsmanship Rating and in the top 3 of their league will advance to the play-off bracket.
Championship T-shirts – All Competitive League champions will receive t-shirts.
